February 2014 February 13 Leadership Development Community of Practice - Strengths-Based Leadership   More Info >>
Strengths-based leadership is an outgrowth of “positive psychology,” which has a research focus on the optimal functioning of human beings, i.e., courage, resilience, and wisdom. By contrast, traditional psychology is mainly concerned with the diagnosis and treatment of mental disorders. In the workplace, we have been conditioned to approach employee development by looking for what is lacking in people (attitudes, behaviors, skills, etc.) and then trying to improve these under the banner of performance management. Rather than trying to “fix” people, what if we turned this paradigm upside down and set out to discover the talents and skills that people naturally possess? If these could be developed into real strengths and leveraged for the organization’s benefit, wouldn’t that improve performance and make people happier, too? The Gallup Organization certainly thinks so, and they have over five decades of research to support this claim. Identifying and making the best use of peoples’ strengths is the basis for a new leadership approach that is the subject of this presentation. We’ll spend some time on each of the following learning objectives: • Recognize what followers need from leadership • Discover how strengths-based leadership approach can enhance your personal leadership effectiveness and improve organizational productivity • Learn how to use the strengths of individuals to build performing teams Speaker: Jonathan Pugh Jonathan is an Organizational Effectiveness and Human Capital Management consultant with over 30 years of related experience—the last 15 as a senior consultant serving commercial and federal government clients.   April 30 Equality: What Does It Really Mean?
Join Dolly Oberoi, CEO, C² Technologies, Inc. at 7:30pm as she speaks on American Women & Equality. Equality: What Does It Really Mean? This is the fifth and last in a series which began in January on the topic American Women: The Long and Winding Road. If you're wondering why a former prison is sponsoring a series on this topic, it's because 72 suffragists were imprisoned at the Workhouse in 1917 as a result of their picketing the White House in support of women's right to vote. The first program dealt with the period from 1848 to 1920 and each subsequent program has looked at women's issues in subsequent years. This final program is a wind-up to the entire series. It should prove to be very interesting.

DCASTD's Leadership Development CoP and CELEMI are Partnering to bring you a business simulation for volatile environments. Join us on June 3, 2014 from 9:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. to see how business simulations can help you prepare your leaders to be effective in today’s volatile environments. You’ll see how the CELEMI PerformanceTM simulation provides the opportunity to explore how to: • Set up internal systems for efficient work flow • Focus resources to meet the changing demands of customers and stakeholders • Create distinguishing features to differentiate your services from those against whom you must compete • Gain stakeholder buy-in to difficult changes • Improve financial performance in the face of diminishing resources In the choppy waters of today’s business environment, leaders must be ready to think constructively and act decisively in response to ever-changing conditions. As they guide their organizations through ongoing cycles of change, leaders must help team members to see opportunities as opposed to limitations. The CELEMI PerformanceTM business simulation provides a venue to explore and apply the leadership competencies needed to lead in these uncertain and volatile times.
