- REFERRAL TRACKING TASKS
- Tracking all referral requests and results going out of and into the MTF.
- Documenting patients’ appointment, with whom, either in the MTF, another MTF, in the network, or with a non-network provider.
- Documenting the name of the referring provider/Primary Care Manager (PCM) and MTF for purposes of returning specialty results to the referring provider/PCM.

- REFERRAL REVIEW
- Reviewing referrals for administrative and clinical completeness, covered TRICARE benefit for the specific patient, required tests, and pre-work.
- Submitting referrals to non-network provider to Managed Care Support Contractor (MCSC) via the fiscal responsible entity for medical necessity/appropriateness review.
- Contacting patient in the event the referral request is invalid, disapproved by second-level review/MCSC and rescheduling patient as soon as possible or instructing patient on other healthcare options.
- COORDINATION TASKS
- Determining where referral will be treated based on rule sets/MOUs/local market conditions, and on MTF capabilities.
- Arranging travel orders and non-medical attendants as required.
- CUSTOMER SERVICE TASKS
- Relieving requesting provider from as many administrative burdens as possible.
- Providing the MTF referring provider with referral results.
- Getting the right patient to the right service/provider within Access to Care (ATC) standards.
- Serving as the “central clearinghouse” and single point of contact for providers, MTF staff, and patients needing help with referrals.
Requirements include:
- Education—High school diploma or GED, completion of Admin Asst program desired.

- Ensuring strict confidentiality of medical records and audit findings.
- Conducting coding conferences, workshops, and in-house sessions to provide updated coding information and changes in coding and/or regulations to facility staff.
- Coding and validating Ambulatory Procedure Visits within 15 days of encounter or receipt of the record on the Coding Compliance Editor work list.
- Maintaining a coding accuracy of 95% per month. Records selected for audit will include 5% of the encounters for Flight Medicine.
- Retrieving documentation when requested and forwarding auditing activities to designated office as directed by Air Force Memoranda of Agreement.
- Performing miscellaneous auditing and coding-related duties as assigned.
- Auditing a minimum of one day’s worth of records for each Military Treatment Facility. Audit should be conducted at end of each day.
- Providing 100% review and correction of Third-Party Collection/Other Health Insurance billable visits within 3 business days.
- Providing 100% review and correction to Ambulatory Data Module-rejected records within 14 days from appointment date.
Requirements include:
- 5 years’ experience as Certified Professional Coder-Hospital (CPC-H), Certified Professional Coder (CPC), Certified Coder Specialist-Physician (CCS-P), and/or Certified Coder Specialist (CCS). (Contract medical coders must obtain the required continuing education hours in order to maintain current and proper national certification(s)).
- Education must be accredited by an accrediting institution recognized by the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) and/or American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC).
- Registered Health Information Technologist (RHIT) or Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) is preferred.
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS).

The online Master’s Degree program is the newest pedagogical component within this mission, and its curriculum accents courses in international and national security studies, applied warfare studies, joint forces, joint planning, the practice of command, air/space and cyberspace studies, leadership in warfare, joint air operations, cultural studies, and research electives. The fully online term is eight weeks in length, preceded by a three-week-long Instructor Orientation Course (IOC).
